Abstract

Clinically, patients with dementia are at high risk of developing ulcerative colitis (UC), especially those with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study explored the potential therapeutic benefits of bamboo leaf flavonoids (BLF) on treating UC in an mouse AD model. Here we proved that BLF decreased oxidative stress in brain and colon tissues, indicating its potential as a neuroprotective agent. BLF reduced the expression levels of GFAP, Iba-1 and Aβ in brain tissue, highlighting its roles in attenuating neuroinflammation and AD pathology. Moreover, its four main components could suppress inflammation and oxidation in both neuron cells and colon epithelial cells, especially, homoorientin demonstrated the strongest effects. Additionally, the embedded homoorientin coated with ursolic acid showed stronger bioactivities. These results suggested that BLF and four main chemicals might be useful for treating AD and UCand the coated homoorientin nanoparticles even demonstrated a stronger bioavailability, providing new perspectives on the potential applications.
